Questions answered..

Posted on 18 Jul 2008 @ 22:36

Thanks for the questions! There are a lot of them so i am not going to go into too much detail but i would hope that it will satisfy your curiosity.

But first.... a couple of things.....

I am officially doing the Concept Sci fi and fantasy Convention in Montreal, October 17th-19th. (conceptsff.ca...i think) It is a small convention. There is a literary guest of honor, a media guest of honor (me), and another guest of honor. If anyone is in the area that weekend...come on down!

Auditions this week went well. We are not as quiet as we thought we would be considering a pending strike. Not going to jinx it and tell you the details but this i know; lost one to an actress named Deborah Cara Unger, kicked some serious ass on one but i might be too old for the role so i think i am going back to read for anther part (director recognized me from Supernatural...said he loved the Ellen role!), and the other one was today. Too early to tell and all the heavy hitters (the gals i always read against) were there so it is all going to depend ohn which way they go. I have worked with the director years ago on a series.

Kramer is okay. Saw the vet earlier this week and there is good news and bad news. Good: thyroid issue has not gotten worse, nor have the kidneys.....Bad: he is pale and losing weight. Red blood cell count getting low. But he's still enjoying life, not in any pain so i will enjoy the time i have with him.

Okay.....questions answered.....in no particular order:

Q: I get the tough action parts all the time but what is my prefered genre? Can i see myself doing a romantic comedy?
A: yes, i would love to do a romantic comedy....a have a rather good sense of humor (got it from the british parents) and good timing....however they don't cast much of them in Vancouver. That usually happens in L.A. during pilot season...which i haven't done in ages. Have a little funny part on the movie Gray Matters. Did a funny series years ago called Beggars and Choosers. My ideal role is to play a washed up, cracked out mother who is losing her battle in life....a la Courtney Love. Don't ask me why, i would just love to play that.

Q: is there something i have been asked to do for a role and refused?
A: uhh, no. Nudity? Done it. Quite a bit of it....and considering i am not a stick like many actresses, i was taking a bit of a risk. I have got some meat on my bones, if you know what i mean. I would turn something down if it was so far off type that i could not do the part justice......or something really raunchy and rediculous. Turned one day a a couple of years ago that was just too weird.

Q: my 'star moment'...as in OMG i met........?
A: My friend works in the music business and for my 30th birthday she got me backstage to meet The Stones and have a beer with them. I was a huge stones fan as a kid and was MADLY in love with Keith Richards (i know...i was young) so that was a star moment for me. My friend and i were walking out of a hotel bar last year and John Cusack was walking in. Wasn't prepared for it and kind of smiled like a dork and said something dumb.....he is tall! I felt like an idiot after that.

Q: is there a role that i found particularily meaning to me?
A: The tv Pilot, The Ranch for Showtime. It never made it to series so it ran as a movie on Showtime. You can get it in Video stores. It was a story around 6 prostitutes working on the Diamond Ranch (whore house) in Nevada, where they are legal. It was not a porn! There was some nudity, but it was more a story about these 6 women and their lives. What got them there. Each of them have very different stories. It was a great show. I am proud of that work. I played the oldest woman in the house. I have a young daughter who i am supporting while she lives at my ex husband's. I am trying to get enough money together to get another job and get out of there with her.

Q:meeting fans....have they done things that awe me? Made me feel like a rockstar......
A: Yes, every convention awes me. The amount of gifts that people bring to me is so touching...and the work they went through.....some gals made me a shirt that says "whiskey now, if you don't mind..." from the show. That took work! Somebody made me a shotglass with a quote of mine drawn on it. A got a framed picture of a cat for Kramer. Someone made me a beatiful necklace that i wear all the time....someone did macramee...etc...and then people brought stuff from their country's...booze, chocolate, hair comb, shirts, lotion, bubble bath, candles...you name it. All conventions make us feel like rockstars. We are just awed by how many connect to our characters....someone cried when she met me! That hit me.

Q: acting as a profession and acting as an artform...which one for me?
A: tough call. Yes it is a business and has to be looked at it as such...schmooze, try to get in to see any casting directors as you can, take workshops to hone your tools.....but it's also an artform in that is a performance . Artform is a performance of sort. I guess everyone approaches it differently...i treat it as a business....some people go stand on the tops of their heads on a mountain in Tibet because they want to see what monks felt.....and be able to portray them......myeh....bit extreme for me. Just get out there and do it! I say.

Q:what tv shows do i enjoy?
A: they change a bit all the time. Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe is one of my faves.. i love him...think he is very fun...have a crush on him. There is some rather racy show on at night and its called something like "memoirs of a callgirl" and it is fantastic. British. Told by the callgirl in very dry fashion. Interesting. There is a new show called The Factory about a couple blue collar guys...love it.
Boston Legal usually, but it's gotten a bit out there lately....annnd.....sell this house.

Q: i work at a horse rescue society. How did i get into it?
A: i am a huge advocate for the better treatment of animals. They are the loves of my and i will spend my life trying to give them a voice where they have none. Tried the SPCA and the Pound and i just couldn't do it; i am too sensitive and would cry and bring them all home. Volunteering with abandoned and homeless horses was a lot easier. They don't seem as vulnerable and the smaller animals. One day i want to move up to lake country in B.C. and open a horse rescue society myself. I suggest everyone volunteer at something in your life. You get a great deal out of it....and it's good karma. I work at Circle F horse rescue society. All none profit so if y'all make a donation i'm sure our fearless leader Walter would be thrilled.

Q: how old was i when i first fell in love....hmmmm, tough one because there are different levels of it.....in grade 8 i fell in love with a grade 10 named Chester Anderson. From the moment i saw him something pulled on my heart. I had never felt that before. Alas, he got kicked out of school. I got his locker and wept into it every day. My REAL adult love experience....like real love was a lovely man named Dean Bartlett. He is the man i should have been with but are careers were heading in different paths at the time. He is married now with a child.....i think about him quite regularily.l

Q: what movie would i see:Narnia, LOTR, Harry Potter or the Hulk:
A: LOTR. Never say any of them and i kick myself...i heard they were very good.

Q: The 4400 or Supernatural...which did i like better to work on?
A: Supernatural. My role on the 4400 was a touch, bitchy, slightly emotionless woman in charge. They didn't do much character development with her so all we saw was attitude in a suit. Don't get me wrong; i love to boss people around....but that was kind of all i did. Ellen had a heart, a sense of humor. She had soul and loyalty and you got to see that. I got to play the emotions with her.....Jarvis on the 4400? Not so much.

Fave episode of the 4400...when i got shot...can't remember the name of it.
Fave episode of Supernatural....big fight with Jo....she blames Dean for her dad'
s death.

Q: if i came back for SN4 would a be a hunter with the boys? I would like to but that would be up to the big boys.....Kripke...i have a feeling he would do something a little different.

Q: fan experience at Conventions?
A: they were all good....different things.....i love being on stage and answering questions...i love the craziness of the cocktail parties....but i also like to sit down with a few guests who i gel with there, and have a quite drink and just chat. The conventions are wonderful but they are draining and you need a lot of energy so if you can sit down with some who you have met there and just chill for an our or two....i love that.

Q: Done live Theatre?
A: No. I feel silly having said i haven't done it......eek....but i haven't. I am a little scared of embarking on it. Very VERY different from tv and film. My friends keep trying to get me in on it....one day.

Q: going back to Eyecon?
A: Sure, i'm open to it.....haven't heard anything from them.

Q: how did i get into my acting career?
A: I think you always know that is what you are going to do. You are either an actor or you are not. I didn't act on my 'calling" til i was about 28. I needed to live a little; went into radio, tv weather reporter, worked for a record label and was a sales rep. At 28 my dad died, i was unhappy in my relationship and i HATED my job....like, the aching stomach sunday night because you were dreading monday morning. So, i though, "hey! What the hell am i doing? Go and do your dream baby.....no time like the present." So i did. Never looked back.

Q: what is one thing i wish i knew before pursing thing career?
A: HOW DAMN HARD IT WAS! Don't know if i would go back and do that again if i knew it was going to be heartbreaking, draining, insecurity-inducing, body image paranoia creating, financially unreliable and emotionally gutting. Yum, sounds good don't it? It is a hard gig. The work is the easy part.....it's everything else that we have to get through.

Q: what happened to me on the 4400? I just dissapeared.
A: i think it was sort of a "killing two birds with one stone" kinda thing. The main reason was that they needed a love interest for Tom. Carina Lombard was off the show. They also realized that they were spending a lot of money on me and Jarvis really wasn't getting a ton of play. She was the boss but she was not directly related to any of the 4400. They tried to build her her own story lines but they kept having to shelf them because the stories about the 4400 were more necessary. So, out i went. Don't think that decision wasn't made til the last minute.

Q: is it weird to shoot death scenes?
A: No, it's fun! I love the extreme emotion stuff so i dig it.

Q: Which one of the boys would i want to rescue me?
A: Both. Sammy if i was needing to be carried out of a burning building...and Dean to get us out of a sticky situation where we gotta talk our way our of a nasty bar fight.

Q: How do i choose a role?
A: I get the audition scene....read it....see the script....that is it. Not picky at all.

Q:Most memorable experience?
A: Couple of the vulnerable scenes in the Ranch. I don't get to do them often.

Q:My role with Jo, was it well executed?
A:Would like to have had more time to see us having a nice bonding moment or two but the writers had to move things along, i think.

Q:Who would i like to most get drunk with and why? (my fave question)
A: I have thought about this....Jack Black....or Seth Rogan...or Steve Zahn.

Q: what place was my favorite to shoot?
A: haven't been too many places but we shot this movie last summer called Last Chance Cafe in an area called Langley. It was hot and sunny for a month and we were cooking. One of the shots was in this cool old cabin surrounded by horses. We fed them apples. It was just so peaceful. That was my fave.

Q: do i get along with the boys and have i been pranked?
A: God yes.....i love the boys. Equally. I have a different kind of relationship with each of them.Have a lot of love and affection for them. Yes, i have been pranked a few times by Jared. Fart can stuff and he gets you in the butt with the dry ice can....and it hurts!

Q: what projects can you see me in?
A: a feature film called Grace....don't know when and where....and a miniseries called Impact. Again, just finished shooting so don't know when or where.

Q: what would my reaction to Jo being John's? and is Bobby a good replacement for John?
A: well I think that Jo IS John's.....but i don't know. Ellen knows. Deep down she knows but she is the only one. Bobby is a good man for those boys but he will never be John. Never.

Q:are you blond or brunette?
A: Ha! Naturally? Brunette...with some red in it.

Q:what was my upbringing like?
A:tough one cause i don't have much time here. It was complicated. Very painful for my brother and I. Every family grows up with a bit of disfunction, but we had it big time. Dad did the best he could but was a sociopath and a rather dangerous drunk. Mum not great at coping and didn't have a great childhood herself so she was missing a few EQ (emotional quotient) points. Parents divored at 10, brother went with dad, me with mum. Dad dies 10 years ago. Cancer. We were actually relieved...isn't that horrible? He was a terrible guy, i'm afraid. I am close with my brother now......we talk a bit about the past but i think it's painful for him. Don't talk to my mother anymore. Past scars.

Q:fave music and fave concert?
A:I am a big music fan....i worked in the music industry for a long time. I am mostly as alternative rock gal. I like it a bit hard. Like the Brit pop. But in the same breath, i love Morcheeba, and Johnny Cash and lots of Classic rock like ELO and Blue Oyster Cult. My favorite concert was the first time Coldplay came to Vancouver. It was their first big show...they weren't huge yet and it was magical. Went with my brother and our buddy Lisa. Also, Dave Mathews at the live venue the Gorge was mesmerizing.

Quickies:
Fave song/why? Power of love by Frankie goes to holl'wd...powerful.
fave album/why? Led zep....Physical Graffiti...reminds me of highschool
fave food: Macdonald's and Dim Sum.
Burn out or fade away? Burn out. For sure.
top 5 songs: see first question, in my time of dying by zeppelin, bohemian like you by the Dandy Warhols....Bound for Vegas by Art Bergman, Hurt by Johnny Cash.
Fave Movie: Charlie and the chocolate factory. Original!
fave cussword: Hmm....gotta be careful here.....initials: C.S. or calling someone a dildo.

Household chore i like: dishes.
I'll never forget my first:......... Car. 1979 Ford Fiesta. Bright Yellow. 4 gears.
High school extracuicular activity: up to grade 10, basketball. Grade 10 and 11, smoking pot. Sorry, you asked. I don't anymore. Haven't for decades.
What age would i choose to retire and what would i do: never retire from acting....but i would buy that chunk of property and take care of abandoned horses/animals.
If i could do another job what would it be?
I would go abroad and work at the game farms in Africa. Love to work with the baby elephants that they are trying to save and raise.

Q: you are stuck between two people on a transatlantic flight....who would they be?
A:Oprah and Bill Gates. No explanation needed, right?

Finally, everyone has been asking about Ellen and season 4, and although i said i knew more......it might not give you the answer you are looking for. I have been in touch with the 'powers that be' and asked about Season 4,and it is a rather tricky situation. Here is the problem; I cannot commit to a gig 3 months down the road. It is professional suicide. I just can't do it. What if i get a series? a huge feature? I would have to turn them down because i had to commit to SN. SN like to have an idea of what is going on a couple months in advance and need a commitment from me 3 months away. Now, the way we could do it is if they at least can give me more than one episode at that time, then at least i am doing more than one and it would make it more worth it, right? Well, they are not prepared to make that kind of commitment to Ellen's character right not. No plans to put her in more than one episode in a row. Now, i have told them to call me if they were thinking about Ellen and to give me the least amount of notice possible, but i don't know if that is going to work.
So, never say never, kids.....but at this point, it doesn't look good. Things can change so don't lose all hope. You just never know.

Okay, i am tired, my fingers hurt and i am off to bed. Too tired to proofread this right now so if you found some massive typos and gramatical errors, i shall fix it later.

Hope you got your answers!

xo

That was about the most entertaining reading I've done all week! I loved your story about John Cusak... I had a few situations like that myself, and laughed so hard at yours that I scared my cat, and dog.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we'll get to see Ellen in the new season, frankly I just loved what your character brought into the show. Here's hoping the powers that be can work things out!

Wow, thanks for answering all those questions! I'm not surprised your fingers are sore after typing all that. It was very interesting reading all of your answers.

You're sure you didn't grow up in the Ottawa Valley right ? :P You remind me a lot of people down here! (not a bad thing at all!) Thanks for giving us a bit of an insight into you, as a person. As for Ellen and S4 it would be nice, but if some awesome-ly huge, amazing, Cusack-esque feature comes along.... Grab the bull by the horns!!!
By Bri @ 20 Jul 2008 12:13 pm

Awesome blog! Thank you so much for answering all those questions!
By Amanda @ 20 Jul 2008 12:52 pm

thanks a lot for your cool interview...very interesting though I am disappointed to hear that SN guys haven't got any plan for Ellen yet in SN4 but as you said keep our fingers crossed, you will be back soon on set.... I would really want to see you back in action for the upcoming Supernatural S4 !!!Good luck Sam and all the best in the near future !!!
By Rooky @ 20 Jul 2008 02:23 pm

Thanks for having this great blog and being honest and available to your fans. I am a Supernatural fan and miss your character alot and always let them know on the message boards. A rich character like yours would add so much to the show. Your parts in the episodes are some of my favorites. I can tell when your character speaks about John that there is true affection there and it makes the story more interesting to think he might have thought you special. I hope somehow in the near future you can come to some agreement about the timeframes you mentioned. I don't know why they keep using new females who don't work out when they have a successful and well loved one right under their noses. Maybe if you take a leap of faith this could still work out.
By Selene @ 20 Jul 2008 02:57 pm

Calling someone a dildo? Hahaha! :D

Love your taste in songs too especially the Johnny Cash song, never fails to make me cry.

I've got my fingers crossed for Ellen's return in season 4, I hope everything works out.

Take care Sam,

Hey Sam!
Thanks for the answers: you're great and awesome, as always!
I myself love the show 'Secret Diary Of A Call Girl'. It grew on me since the pilot, for things such as the quote: "Escort, hooker, prostitute, whore, I don't mind what you call me, that's just semantics." I think it's brilliant!

[I hope I'm allowed to write those words here!!! But since I saw you've used them yourself talking about 'The Ranch'... hihihi Otherwise, oooops, I'm sorry!]

I also really enjoy your music tastes... Hurt by J. Cash is in my top10 as well!
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for your auditions. Cuddle Kramer a bit for me too...

"There is some rather racy show on at night and its called something like "memoirs of a callgirl" and it is fantastic. British. Told by the callgirl in very dry fashion. Interesting"

LOL! Yeah that's "Secret Diary of a Call Girl"...and it's lead by Billie Piper, "Rose Tyler" from Doctor Who. I love that girl, and I've heard how fantastic the show is, but I'm not sure if I could handle watching it....it'd be like destroying my childhood....in a way...you know? Rose is such a cute kid in Doctor Who and I've grown to love her with the Doctor and to all of a sudden see her gettin' all racy I'd be like AHHH!! hahah! I dunno...maybe one day, though. hahah!

Glad you're doing well!! Ditto w/ Kramer! And fahfjkahw! I hope you're @ Eyecon!! Hope to see you soon! Take care!!
By Marcie ((DLGR)) @ 22 Jul 2008 07:12 am

You are a woman with a great set of balls, figuratively speaking, of course. You have to come to LA for pilot season.
By Walter @ 27 Jul 2008 02:47 pm

Whatever future projects you get.
I hope there is something that you smile in.
Show us some toofs girl.

Geez, the severe thing works, and is kinda saxzy, but I bet you have a kickass smile.
By Trik_Ster @ 28 Jul 2008 10:25 am

Hey, Sam! What great (and often poignant) reading with all your Qs and As. You are truly a remarkable gal to share so much of yourself with us - and to type your fingers to nubs, LOL! It's terrific to get a sense of the person behind the acting, and it makes me all the more glad I had the chance to see and meet you at EyeCon.

Last but not least - my heart goes out to you and your little Kramer. Our good ol' retired cow dog, Dolly, is diagnosed with Lymphoma, and not it's just a matter of monitoring her quality of life until it's time. Their little lives are so short, but they weave themselves into our hearts inexorably. *hugs you - scritches Kramer*
Cheers ~
